081216 – Expensive Doggie Eve
Tuesday, December 16th, 2008So tomorrow I drop the doggie off at the vet for the reconstruction of his front leg. The orthopedic surgeon plans to use a plate to put the bones back together. Wonder what I’ll use to put our finances back in order…this one’s going to hurt the wallet quite a bit. But we’ll survive. Let’s just hope there aren’t anymore pet catastrophes on the horizon.
I’m looking forward to heading to Mountain View tomorrow to see Sylvia and visit Nathania’s shop. I may have to do a little retail therapy tomorrow to make myself feel better.
Wish us luck for a successful surgery tomorrow.
081211 – Booker learned a new trick…and we’re all paying for it
Thursday, December 11th, 2008So the happy, dancing dog in the bottom right of the picture above learned a new trick when we moved here to San Jose.
Digging.
Now, digging is a normal doggie thing to do. But in Las Vegas, it’s worth your life to dig a hole with all the caliche (limestone). Sure, you can dig a hole–if you have picks, sledgehammers, and a couple sticks of TNT.
Here in San Jose, the dirt is much nicer, much softer, and much easier to dig. Which is exactly what Booker did this morning between the time I put the trashcans out at 5:00 a.m. and when I tried to feed him breakfast at 6:00.
Anyway, to make a long story short, the vet bills so far are well over $1,000, and–oh joy–we’re scheduled for surgery on Wednesday. I can only imagine what that’s going to cost.
But then I think about the absolutely fabulous time we had on the beach this past Saturday playing ball with the dog, and the money seems just a little less important. There are far stupider reasons to accrue more debt, right? Besides, what’s the alterative? It’s only slightly less expensive to amputate as opposed to reconstructive surgery….
Crap. It’s been a long, stressful, expensive day. Thank god I got the job…
