100121 – Freakish

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

So I think I’m finally getting the hand of two-color knitting (I use both hands, and I think I’ve got the tension thing licked). Started with Hansa Mittens. Still have some problems, though.

Exhibit 1. Hansa mitt without thumb. Note the F-ed up braid on the cuff, and try not to notice where I made up my own pattern around the middle of the mitten.

Hansa Mitten, sans thumb.

Exhibit 2. This mitten is FREAKISHLY LONG. I have some ideas on how to fix it (most of which involve lots of frogging), but I want to wait and confirm with Sylvia tomorrow before I do something drastic. Note that the width could not have been any more perfect if I’d planned it….

The good news is that knitting these is like eating potato chips (and MUCH healthier for me). So I’ve ordered Terri Shea’s book (Selbuvotter: Biography of a Knitting Tradition) along with the new Homespun Handknit book. Got a great deal from KnitPicks (currently having a 40% off sale on books, and might have accidentally ordered some sport-weight yarn to get the free shipping.

100115 – Oh I wish I had a Cracker Barrel biscuit…

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Lots of random today, but that’s OK because today is the start of a (magic) three-day weekend. We’re starting the evening with a fish tacos experiment, with leftover Swedish meatballs for the kids. They don’t like fish. Actually, I don’t really like fish either, but every once in a while I get a tickle to try again. So, fish tacos.

Because of the fish tacos, I had to run to the grocery store to pick up some limes and some fresh cilantro. The local grocery store has signs up on all the doors and at all the registers letting you know that you can add a donation to the Red Cross for Haiti to your grocery bill. So I did. And because I did, so too did the man in the checkout line behind me. He thought he was going to have to fill out a form or something–when he saw how easy it was, he donated. That’s a good feeling.

So then I was checking blogs and saw that Crazy Aunt Purl had put up her own knit signal for Haiti donations. So I e-mailed her the grocery store option and she added it to her post. Which then led to a brief discussion of a.) the end of the world (otherwise known as a predicted 7 inches of rain in SoCal) and b.) a kernel of an idea to campaign for Cracker Barrel to come to California.

It’s slightly embarrassing to admit, but while we were living in Las Vegas, we once made a special trip to St. George just to eat at the Cracker Barrel. And that 2,400-calorie breakfast was *so* worth it! If I remember correctly, part of the reason that CB hasn’t come to California has to do with their supplier policies. I may be misremembering, but I seem to recall that the stores that aren’t owned by the parent company (less than one-third) are required to purchase from the parent company suppliers, and they don’t deliver out west.

But a girl can dream.

Speaking of dreaming, I better get moving so that I can get the fish in to marinate.

Tonight’s soup is brought to you by Emeril:

Whodathunk that I would have neither bay leaves nor thyme in the house??? Thanks, neighbors, for the bailout! Sounds like it’s time for me to pitch all my spices and buy new/fresh…I found some dried basil from 1998(!) with the other spices. That’s just wrong.

Pics later after processing.
