100615 – Revenge of Suburbia

If you’d asked me twenty years ago what I’d be doing right now, you can bet that “suburban mother of two who works from home and volunteers as a Cub Scout den leader and a Guardian Council member for Job’s Daughters” would *not* have been the answer I gave you. Not even close. No way, no how.

When I was twenty, I was pretty sure that I was going to graduate from college and live with a famous National Geographic photographer. I would be the writer of those fantastic NatGeo articles, while my derring-do significant other snapped incredible photos of the world around us and all the fabulous and exciting places we’d visit. We would become a famous team recognized for our brilliance and our ability to paint the world a picture of its own little corners.

But you know what? I’m pretty damned happy as a suburban mother of two. The kids are happy and healthy and intelligent and pretty damned funny when they want to be, and while Eric is no National Geographic photographer, I absolutely *love* every photo he’s taken of the kids and our own adventures–and he definitely has the sense of adventure I dreamed about.

Twenty years ago I would have thought you were nuts if you told me that I’d be knitting and spinning yarn and loving it. I would have thought you were crazy for saying that I’d be in love with baking my own bread and making my own jams and jellies. And I definitely would have called the funny farm for you if you’d told me that sitting on a bench and watching the kids play with the dog would be my new favorite pasttime.

But here’s where I am. And I’m happy to be here.
